Overview
East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) is undertaking a significant transformation programme to modernise infrastructure, improve patient pathways and align services with future models of care. Alongside this ambition sits a clear commitment to delivering an efficiency programme focused on optimising resources, reducing waste and maintaining long-term financial sustainability.
Procea has supported ESHT in shaping and progressing this transformation, ensuring that organisational priorities are aligned with wider system objectives and the NHS Medium Term Plan.
This included ensuring that the transformation programme was well structured, governed and supported system-wide priorities such as integrated care, improved access, workforce sustainability, digital enablement and financial resilience.
What we were asked to do
Procea was engaged to provide strategic support and assurance across ESHT’s transformation agenda, with a particular focus on aligning digital, operational and efficiency objectives. The Trust sought support to better understand its current position, identify opportunities for improvement, and establish a structured roadmap that balanced transformation ambition with operational reality.
Our approach
Procea worked collaboratively with ESHT to take a structured, evidence-led approach to transformation.
An initial discovery and diagnostic phase established a clear understanding of the Trust’s baseline position. This included analysis of performance and benchmarking data, engagement with clinical, operational and executive stakeholders, and service-level reviews across acute and community pathways.
Our work focused on understanding the interaction between infrastructure, workforce pressures, service integration and digital maturity, while also identifying opportunities to improve productivity and deliver efficiency savings. Throughout, we ensured that proposed interventions were realistic, sequenced and aligned with both organisational and NHS Medium Term Plan objectives.
Procea also supported the Trust in strengthening programme governance, clarifying decision-making structures and ensuring risks, dependencies and milestones were clearly understood and managed.
Outcome
The engagement resulted in a shared, evidence-based view of ESHT’s transformation readiness and a prioritised roadmap for delivery. This included clear recommendations across programme governance, digital enablement, workforce and service integration, alongside identified opportunities for efficiency and productivity improvement.
By grounding transformation ambitions in data, stakeholder insight and operational context, ESHT was able to progress a patient-centred, sustainable transformation programme that supports system priorities while responding to financial and workforce pressures.
